Where's Wombat? The Search For A Child's Spirit

After my son’s death, I searched for his spirit. I found it in the grace of a special tree. And later in the wisdom of young and old friends.

With time, we're all affected by the loss of someone central to our lives. We can be affected forever – especially if that person is our child. Many of us know of funerals, burials, sadness - but what else happens within the journey of grief?

This video was made in Central Australia about a year ago. It accompanies a post with video credits on the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) Open site.

An upwelling of creativity has flowed with many related posts also on ABC Open accessible via the above link. It feels timely to share this one video with a wider audience.

In Central Australia, I live and work amongst Aboriginal people who repeatedly suffer the tragic and premature deaths of loved ones. These losses pile up. For some, too many deaths cascade into ‘complex trauma’ where repeated burdens of grief can smother vitality and life’s purpose. I now feel a deeper empathy for others who grieve. I made another little film ‘Somebody’s Child’ that acknowledges my loss is just one of many here. It pays homage to people and families affected by road accidents.

... Death raises important questions about life.
