About this Death Cafe

You are warmly invited to join to join the Norwich Death Cafe Team for an evening of tea, cake and conversation…

Though we have been holding pop-up events in the city for ten years this will be our first time at Silver Road and we’re very much looking forward to it.

For anyone who has been to a Death Cafe event before you will know that they can be surprising and uplifting, leading us to a deeper sense of connection with our fellow humans.

For those of you who are new to the Death Cafe experience here is a flavour of what to expect…

At a Death Cafe people, often strangers, gather to eat cake, drink tea and discuss death.

Our objective is 'to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives'.

A Death Cafe is a group-directed discussion of death with no agenda, objectives or themes. It is a discussion group rather than a grief support or counselling session.

Our Death Cafes are always offered:

- On a not-for-profit basis

- In an accessible, respectful and confidential space

- With no intention of leading people to any conclusion, product or course of action

- Alongside refreshing drinks and nourishing food – and cake!

Death Cafes are always offered free of charge but we invite guests, if they are able, to make a small donation at the event which goes towards running costs such as hiring venues and most importantly buying tea and cake! This enables us to continue running these events

About Alex Watson and Su Squire

Alex is a soul midwife and end of life doula in training. She works as a carer for the elderly and on the palliative care ward at the N&N with the Anne Robson trust Butterflies. She came to this career after a long and varied work life all over Europe in everything from English teaching to drag cabaret. After feeling the need to find a more spiritual purpose and meaning to her life she discovered soul midwifery and is now dedicating herself to offering loving support to those coming to the end of their lives.

Su is a storyteller, theatre-maker and community arts facilitator who specialises in creating work about death and grief. She is also a facilitor of Grief Tending in Community - a group process in which people come together to acknowledge and bring healing to grief in its many forms. Su has been hosting Death Cafe events in Norwich since 2013 and is passionate about creating spaces for people to talk openly about death.
