“Life is itself without beginning, an indestructible force of the Universe. Otherwise, from where did that superhuman strength come which hurls us from the unborn to the born…Life, not Death, is the indestructible force of the universe. Death is simply a part of Life, but it’s Life which is the force.” Nikos Kazantzakis
A passionate plea in support of assisted dying by Judy Finnegan and Richard Madeley

Lord Falconer's Assited Dying Bill is coming before parliament on 18 July.
I hope the vote is in support of the bill. A similar law exists in Oregon and has not caused problems. Assisted dying has been a relief for some people who are suffering a great deal in their dying despite all the palliative care they get. It is only humane to allow dying people the choice to take their own life. I admire Judy and Richard. They decided if one of them became seriously ill and were dying and wanted to be assisted in their dying, they would help the other to die and then commit suicide rather than go to prison.

Thought-provoking article about preparing loved ones for plans to suicide. Reinforces the importance of talking about death as a part of life.

A short ducumentary video about 17 year old Zach who is dying on cancer but lives to the full. Inspirational and moving. A lovely young man and a delighful family:
Zach Sobiech, at the age of 14, found out he had a rare form of terminal cancer. So he became a rock star, and millions of people got to see his music before he passed away on May 20, 2013.
When we originally shared his story last year, 17 million of you watched this, and his song "Clouds" became the first independent hit to reach #1 on the iTunes music charts.
While there is lots of funding for research on the more prevalent cancers of the world, there's never enough funding to accomplish the research needed to cure rare cancers like the one Zach had. You helped raise over $750,000 for research into a very rare cancer. Which made me very happy.
"Can't we talk about something more pleasant?"

An only child's illustrated memoir about managing (or not) the decline and death of her parents.
After the idea of Good & Evil materialized in some 'Paradise' & 'Hell', the Final Destination of Death became part of the scam, and is now the great delusion of modern civilization.
From The Humanist.com
"Scarcely one man can, even in dying, wholly detach himself from
the idea of life; in his ignorance he must needs imagine that there
is in him something that survives him, and cannot sufficiently
separate or emancipate himself from his remains"

Death Cafe is about conversation, telling our stories, sharing stories. It is an important way of linking with other people but also a way we can make sense of our experiences. Death Cafe has a vital role in this process of authentic, personal story telling about death, told in an atmosphere of openness and non discrimination.
The story of Phil Kaye will blow you away, in a good way. He uses poetry, he is a poet, and he is a story teller. This is not a story about death as such, though it touches on it. It is about story telling. I loved what he did!

Death Cafe Webinar

Hi all,
In conjunction with the Association for Death Education and Counseling, I am hosting a webinar about Death Cafe:
The Death Café Movement: Engaging the Community with Conversations about Death
You do not need to attend this webinar in order to host your own Death Cafe. The guidelines for how to host are right here on this website at http://deathcafe.com/how/
HOWEVER, if you have never talked directly with me regarding my Death Cafe work, and you are a new or prospective host, you may want to attend. I will explain discuss what I have learned from hosting and mentoring other hosts. I will explain best practices, but also the why behind the what. There will be plenty of time for Q&A. Full disclosure: I am getting paid a flat fee for my time in preparing for and conducting this webinar. I am using 100% of the stipend towards my Hong Kong trip to present the Death Cafe concept at the International Conference on Grief and Bereavement. That trip and conference is entirely out of pocket because I feel strongly about the value of the Death Cafe concept and want to help practitioners all over the world.
Warmest Regards,
Lizzy Miles
