About DeathCafeIowa:
Hello! We are Buffy and Becca, of the Young Bereavement Professionals Group located in Des Moines, Iowa. We started hosting monthly Death Cafes back in September of 2015 and absolutely love being able to host them for our community! They have been pretty successful with multiple regulars that come to our Death Cafes.
What brings you to Death Cafe?
The conversation! It is always so interesting to see what people want to talk about and where the conversation goes during our time together.
What would you like your legacy to be?
Just like Death Cafe's motto...to help “increase awareness of death to help people make the most of their (finite) lives”!
Thoughts for sharing:
Death is not the opposite of life, death is the opposite of birth.

Our most recent Death Café was held September 17th and had 3 people in attendance. Due to there being only 3 of us this time around, we did have quite a short meeting this month ☹ We touched on a handful of topics, beginning with the planning of your funeral and how this pre-planning may benefit or take away from your family’s experience. However, the bulk of our conversation actually surrounded body donation! With one of our attendees having chosen this, the recent horror stories in Texas of unclaimed deceased being illegally sold had naturally been on their mind. We then ended our conversation with how all ...

Our Death Café was held over Zoom this past February and had 3 people in attendance. After brief introductions and some catching up we began a long conversation on all thing’s death related!
We started with the importance of balancing grief alongside celebratory life events, and how tricky it is to go through such happy moments while grieving. From here we transitioned into speaking on how grief is felt/expressed differently by everyone and is not something that can be fixed. Everyone has different needs, so simply showing up and listening to your grieving person is a great way to offer support.
The final broader topic we ...

We had a vitual Death Café on December 19, 2023 via Zoom. Elliott from Iowa Death Collective facilitated the café with two people attending.
