A group of 8 gathered at a new venue for this Death Cafe, the venue worked well and the conversation flowed. A lot of questions asked seeking clarification and understanging of what happens to the body when someone dies, what it takes to look after someone at home, busting the myths. Other topics included the End of Life choice act NZ, natural burial and water cremation in NZ

We look forward to the next one which is yet to be scheduled.

There were twelve attendees and two facilitators at this Death Cafe held at The Fat Camel Cafe. This is the third DC we have held at this venue which mostly works fine although at times can be noisey as reflected in some of the feedback. We do like to hold Death Cafes in a cafe as it adds to the informality and the normalising of the conversation. We'ver yet to find the ideal venue. The conversation was free flowing and wide ranging and focussed on two particular topics, assisted dying and the legalities around cremains and what to do with them. The feedback was positive and encouraging ...

We were a group of seven women who gathered at The Fat Camel Café in Whangarei, NZ, the third time we have gathered at this venue. We don’t ask for RSVP’s, so it’s always surprise as to how many people will attend. I was the facilitator (Jo Moselen) along with support from my colleague Jo Samuel. Being a small group with most people knowing each other or at least acquainted in some way it was a relaxed an intimate gathering where we discussed, End of life choice - how it is and isn't working, the work underway to support an advanced directive for Dementia in ...

Once again we held our death cafe at The Fat Camel cafe which unfortunately was very cold which was commented on in the feedback. Not such a good venue in the winter. The conversation flowed and included medical assisted death, natural burial, supporting people who are ill, dying and grieving, suicide and personal stories of death experiences. The feedback overall continues to be positive a with comments such as "good conversation, respectful listening, conversation flowed and lead us in different directions"

There were thirteen people in total with one person attending for the first time.

After not having had a Death Cafe for over a year it was great to meet again. There were 18 (including the two facilitators), all of us women, regulars  and new comers. The  lively and engaging discussion included, end of life choice, what do you do when someone dies, unexpected death and post mortems, what makes a good or bad death. The feed back was unanimously positive about the event, the negatives were about noise and difficulty hearing for some. We tried a new venue and as with all past venues the noise (cafe's are noisey) is the one negative. This venue fully supported and encouraged Death ...

We met a t Dickens Inn, the separate room was occupied so we met in the main area of the cafe. Meeting at cafes always brings the issue of noise and difficulty of hearing. There were a group of 9 of us a couple of new people and regular attendees. A range of topics were discussed including end of life choice bill (which was voted in in the 2020 Government election) advance life planning, personal experiences of the death of a loved one and beliefs about after death. It was a lively discussion with most people getting a chance to contribute. 2 hours goes so quickly.

This Death Café was on the morning after an overnight deluge which caused widespread flooding and destruction, a group of 10 hardy folks braved the conditions to be there, with others not being able to make it due to road closures and unsafe conditions.  Most had been to a Death Café before with a couple of new people.  We began our conversation with why we had come along to a Death Café - a place to talk about death and dying, seeking information, interested in others ideas about what happens after death were some of what motivated people to come along. Our conversation then focused a lot on a ...

Death Cafe write up: Death Cafe Whangarei no#9

Posted by Jo Moselen on Nov. 11, 2019, 8:25 p.m.

We met at another new venue for our 9th Death Cafe, at this venue we were able to occupy a room to ourselves, although that did not achieve a quieter space as comments were made to it being a bit airless and echoed. We were 15 in number including 2 of us hosting the café. There were 5 people who had not joined us before.

We started with introductions and how people were feeling at that time about life and or death.

One person had recently experienced the death of a partner and shared her feelings of lack of support and the difficulty she experienced with the ...

We gathered at the airport cafe, The Apron, for what was another thought provoking and stimulating conversation amongst 27 of us. It was a surprising turnout given the weather. We split into two groups and after a round of introductions the conversations ranged from end of life choices, what makes a good death, sharing of personal experiences and stories, near death experiences, body and organ donation and the practicalities around death and dying.

To close we invited everyone to sum up in 3 or 4 words how they were feeling and it was clear everyone was energised and not quite ready to finish the conversation.

With such a ...

Our meeting in March was our 7th death cafe meeting. There were 14 of us in total, 9 first time attendees.

Our conversation started with introductions and sharing about what brought us to this meeting. From the new people it was about having an interest to attend and to experience and find out what happens at a death cafe.

Others who have attended before talked about how our conversations always left them feeling enlivened.

We discussed the experience of being completely undone and put back together in a new way, being completley changed on a cellular level by the deaths of close loved ones. Interest was shown in ...

The Totara Cafe was once again our venue and despite the weather we were able to occupy the big round outdoor table up until the last 30 mins when we did have to retreat indoors.

We were a group of eleven of which six were attending for the first time.

As always after an introductory round the conversation gains a life of its own and we discussed suicide with some people having direct experience of the death of a loved one by suicide, how we feel about there being no funeral which is becoming more common and this led into what IS a funeral and do we think ...

Death Cafe write up: Death Cafe Whangarei no#5

Posted by Jo Moselen on Aug. 20, 2018, 1:59 a.m.

We held this death cafe at a cafe that had a separate room, which was great except the arrival of cafe staff with orders was a continous interruption. 13 people came along which is the most we have had at a cafe. The larger number created an energy where the conversations were deep, connected honest and emotional. The feed back reflected that apart from the interruptions from cafe staff most people got alot value from attending and want them to be held more frequently.  To leave a death cafe with a feeling of connection was lovely.
