About Carmel OBeirne :

I am grateful to have lived over  60 years and raised two daughters who are both unique and conscious humans.

I have had a long career in Education working with children and youth as well as young adults coaching and mentoring.

Over the last 12 years or so I have found myself living an examined life ...noticing and pausing, slowing and reflecting and hopefully becoming a better human with heart open .

I am growing into elderhood with an open heart and learning so much as I go .

So much gratitude for this life now .

What brings you to Death Cafe?

As we live life and be present in all the ups and downs we grow and  deepen into our true selves .
I found my way into the Death Cafe movement through  a growing interest  in mortality and a desire to wonder about having  a very different end of life to the ones I had witnessed around me .

Death Cafes offer a safe space to share all things End of Life and Death .The conversations seem to immediately go deep and to the heart of what really matters.

What would you like your legacy to be?

That I experienced life with love and was loving in all relationships ...from heartfelt encounters with strangers to the deepest love and connection with friends and family.

Love is all there is .

Thoughts for sharing:

Death Cafe conversations have  supported me to live my best life now.

Awareness of cultural differences in the end of life experience allow us to open to possibilities we perhaps hadn't considered .

To live life  with grace and dignity is key to a good death ...gracefully accepting that we all die and being present with all that end if life and death brings .

Thanks to the nine people  who attended our Death Over Brunch in Northcote recently. The cafe atmosphere  was a little noisy however we still managed  to connect our hearts as we shared stories and pondered on everything end of life and death.
We now have  a small group of inspiring humans who are wanting to run with these conversations and see how many different groups we can impact ....opening the conversation around death.

I am looking forward to watching where this leads .

At our last Death Cafe we were honoured to have a creative and passionate film maker attend and film the event for her up coming documentary ...A Story of Endings.

All attendees were comfortable with the filming and understood how important it is for our communities to have conversations around death and dying .

We had deep and vulnerable conversations and really connected as a group.

We intend to gather again to delve further into conversation about death and in doing so open ourselves to living life in a more connected and curious way.

Thanks to all who attended with open hearts and vulnerability .

Thankyou to the group of women this time who gathered on a cold and wet Melbourne Sunday morning and opened their hearts to share all things death and dying.
Most agreed that these gatherings are so valuable and that in our day to day lives and communities it isnt always easy to find people to talk with about death and dying and end of life generally . They really are taboo subjects for many and we are happy to be breaking this barrier and talking more openly about what is true to us in living and dying .

Thanks to Paula for supporting me again  with the facilitating and to ...

Death Cafe write up: Death Cafe Clifton Hill

We gathered in Clifton Hill today to mark Dying to Know Day 2022. Nine of us shared our thoughts and listened to each other speak from the heart about all things End of Life and Death.

Grieving our loved humans  and pets was a common theme today ...Stories about the challenges and the beauty in being with the dying. Staying grounded and open while the emotions of others around you are roller coasting.
A huge takeaway for me was the understanding of how life is made up of many deaths ..as we experience the cycles of life and move through the decades we grieve  losses and embrace new ...

This morning we hosted our 3rd Death Cafe at Roseneath Community Room in Clifton Hill Melbourne .There were 7 of us, all women and the conversation was free flowing and informative with everyone contributing and holding space for each other. Today we went global and made interesting connections and links to climate change, capitalism and the death of systems as we know them .

Thanks to all who attended and connected .
