About Columbus Death Cafe/Lizzy Miles:
The first Death Cafe in the U.S. was hosted by Lizzy Miles (right) and Maria Johnson in Columbus, Ohio on July 19, 2012.
Lizzy and Maria are grad school classmates who discovered they both had a passion for hospice and end-of-life issues.
Lizzy continued to host Death Cafes in Columbus and has mentored dozens of other hosts around the world.
New to hosting Columbus Death Cafe in November 2013, Linda Manley is a nurse practitioner with 35 years of emergency and flight nursing and a background in near-death experience research.
What brings you to Death Cafe?
Originally, I thought I would help people become more comfortable talking about death. I soon realized from my program evaluations that the people who came to the Death Cafe events were already comfortable talking about death. People who are not comfortable don't come! I don't like to push the idea on anyone. If you don't want to talk about it, you don't have to. Everybody is on their own journey. I do believe those who do confront their mortality when it is a hypothetical have an easier time when it becomes a reality. We are all going to die sometime and we really have no idea when.
What would you like your legacy to be?
I want people to say I was happy-go-lucky. I'm really not, but I hope to be by the time I die. I'm working on it.
Thoughts for sharing:
"I like living. I have sometimes been wildly, despairingly, acutely miserable, racked with sorrow, but through it all I still know quite certainly that just to be alive is a grand thing." - Agatha Christie
"Life is pleasant. Death is peaceful. It's the transition that's troublesome." ―Isaac Asimov
"No one can confidently say that he will still be living tomorrow."
-Euripides

This was a Death Cafe I will never forget. We had a good turnout, which always a pleasant surprise. I never know how many people will come since I don’t require RSVPs. We had 22 guests and 2 hosts which meant an animated room at the Westerville Library. I always do small group rotations and then at the end, we have a group discussion.
Phil, a musician with the Drowsy Lads who happens to be a fan of Death Cafe brought his banjo and played an instrumental tune for the attendees while they were filling out their surveys.
When we had the big group discussion, my friend ...

I'm attending the Association for Death Education and Counseling (ADEC) conference in San Antonio, TX. Coincidentally, the ICCFA conference is also here. In the past two years not much has changed for the Columbus Death Cafe and yet everything has changed. The Columbus event is just as it was 2 years ago...but now we have a whole connected network of hosts around the country and around the world.
There was a smaller group this evening, but with Death Cafe conversations, smaller is sometimes better. The diversity of the attendee backgrounds and experiences always leads to an unpredictable conversation. One attendee had a background in processing death penalty cases, which he mentioned as he introduced himself. This led into a conversation about the recent ruling in California which deemed death ...

At ICGB, we learned about other ways patient and caregiver anxiety can be reduced via mind-body training, art therapy or ...

My favorite place to buy souvenirs is the grocery store. It is relatively inexpensive to buy a large number of gift items.
The other day Megan and I came across a Russian Roulette chocolate "game" here in Hong Kong. There are 12 chocolates in the box: 11 are tasty, and one has hot chili peppers and will "blow your head off." Immediately I laughed. Then I started thinking about how I could buy chocolate without ...

Tretraphobia, or fear of the number 4, is very real in Hong Kong. The elevators are missing the 4th and 13th floors. The superstition against the number 4 is due to its Cantonese similarity to the word for death. Here is an article about a current local controvery with the number 13. Note at the bottom of the article, they were succesful with banning the number 4.

On November 14th, the Columbus Death Café met at the Lavash Café in Clintonville. The 14 participants were a diverse group with a wide range in ages (20’s to 60’s), backgrounds, and spiritual beliefs with a few describing themselves as atheists and agnostic, setting the tone for a thought-provoking night.
The dialogue was sometimes funny, often touching. One person read an excerpt from the popular book “Stiff” leading to a discussion about dark humor, grief and coping skills. Others discussed buckets lists, loss of pets, and an emerging trend of celebrating someone’s life before they die rather than after, at the funeral. A social ...

This Death Café was an exciting event because we had just recently been featured in the Huffington Post in an article, “Death Cafes grow as a Place to Discuss, Learn about End of Life.” The article garnered hundreds of comments and I started to get emails from people who were interested in attending. I worried that we might have TOO big of a crowd.
But let’s be real here. People aren’t beating down the doors to have a conversation about death. It take a brave soul to face their own mortality. I used to worry about attendance, but now ...
