Death Cafe write up: Windy City Death Cafe

Eight individuals, including six new folks, participated in last Friday's Windy City Death Cafe. Everyone actively participated, bringing conversation ranging from individual experiences of grief and loss to the experience of being present when a loved one dies to messages received from beyond the grave. We also covered the variety of body disposition options available today and useful documents for end-of-life planning. Asked to describe their experience of a Death Cafe, responses included "eye-opening," "fun," "refreshing," & "communal." A truly wonderful evening!

Fifteen guests gathered together on an intermittently sunny and rainy Sunday afternoon at 2nd Unitarian Church in Chicago to explore death. Guests conversed easily about the importance of sharing one's wishes with family members and loved ones, and brainstormed practical ideas about how to start the conversation. Suggestions included using a 5 Wishes document or something similar to document the practical aspects of one's wishes, and using that as a platform to get into the emotional considerations. Other subjects discussed included gender roles in caretaking, healthcare POAs, funeral practices and experiences, and considering how death informs how one chooses to live. A lively and informative afternoon!

Two former and one new guests braved the elements to create a cozy and intimate Windy City Death Cafe on Friday, 2/20. Our former guests, a funeral director/officiant and a hospital chaplain, had, fittingly, officiated at a funeral and attended a wake earlier in the day. Topics of conversation included the experience of witnessing death in a professional capacity while managing the attendant emotions, Atul Gawande's book Being Mortal, the medicalization of death (and birth, as discussed by our new guest), home vs hospital deaths, cultural practices around birth and death, and Edna St Vincent Millay's poem Dirge Without Music. Ten guests gathered for our 3rd Death Cafe just as the sun set on a glorious Spring day in Chicago. Among our guests were a 90-year-old WWII veteran, a retired hospice nurse, a PhD who left his decades-long position in academia to follow his passion, an HR executive, and an artist and near-death experiencer in her 7th decade. We covered a wide range of conversational topics over tea and zucchini brownies, including end-of-life care, health care directives, having "the conversation" with loves ones, burial options, personal experiences with dying, and whether we'd live differently if we knew what happened after we die. Despite wind, sleet, and Chicago's ever-present road construction, 15 lively folks attended our first Death Cafe! Held at the lovely and welcoming Be Optimal Holistic Health Center in Glenview and fortified by tea and skull cookies, our guests actively participated in small and large group discussions. Evaluation results indicated high levels of satisfaction with the structure, content, facilitation, and, most of all, the opportunity to discuss death with like-minded people. Words used most often to describe guests' Death Cafe experience were comfortable, thought-provoking, open, friendly, and healing. We can't wait to do it again!
