June Death Cafe
A write up of Death Cafe Iowa
For June’s Death Café Iowa we met at Palmers Deli & Market on Ingersoll. Becca Suvalsky (member of the Bereavement Professionals Group) facilitated the group. We had 8 people in attendance, 2 men and 6 women, and participants ranged in ages and professions.
Members brought several interesting topics to the group this month.
Several group members brought things to discuss such as an article that was published a number of years ago form the “End Well” conference in San Francisco. The article discussed using natural relaxants such cannabis and psilocybin mushrooms for those suffering. These drugs have been linked to dramatically helping those who are at the end of life. Another group member brought an article that discussed fascinating ancient burial rituals from around the world. Several topics also discussed included regents of the dying, death board/card games, and different ways to families can preserve a part of the person’s body after they die. Group members shared about freeze drying a tattoo or keeping a loved one’s surgical screw after the person has been cremated. We also discussed how schools discuss death and how the media discusses death. Group members compared the two and discussed the similarities. Each member contributed personal examples and experiences throughout the Death Cafe.
