Death Cafe ~ by the bay April 2021

April 2021 - Another energetic, enthusiastic, curious international group some who have attended my DC before and others new. They openly shared their experiences, questions and were so authentic in opening up about the topic many are 'scared' or adverse to talk about...death...dying. It was a wonderful one and a half hours . We shared information and stories about

  • "being present' that dying and death is not all terrible, it can be profoundly beautiful ("the beautiful and terrible")
  • demystifying death and dying and normalising it
  • conversation starter tools
  • that a life-limiting condition can give us an opportunity to discuss and plan our wishes, our funerals and better prepare our loved ones
  • the importance of having these conversations
  • that we can 'rewrite our story'
  • acknoweldging the 'importance of death' and of building knowledge and resilience
  • the great value of creating a community where we better recognise grief and loss; and bereavement (for children and ourselves and others)
  • that the word 'bereavement' comes from 'bereft' = stolen/ripped away
  • the impratnce of rituals for the living
  • Compassionate Communities
  • new theories about grief, loss and bereavement (Continuing bonds; and Dual Process)
  • Finding Meaning: the Sixth Stage of Grief
  • Dr Lois Tonkin _ grief and loss
  • Trace Moroney's books for children (re emotions)
  • Rituals Today - Celebrant (UK) Ros Kuyvenhoven
  • Build a Better Brain at any Age - Dr Sanjay Gupta
  • The Day of the Dead - Mexico
  • The Grace in Dying - Kathleen Singh
  • The me journal - Shane Windham
  • A variety of TV shows on death, dying. Some that made us laugh; others that made us cry
  • the importance of death literacy
