Virtual Death Cafe - North Coast Oregon
A write up of Virtual Death Cafe - PDT North Coast Oregon
This was my first time hosting a Death Café, and overall, I think it went well. We had a total of six participants, though one person left early due to feeling unwell.
Discussion & Experience:
The conversation flowed naturally, covering general feelings about death, personal connections to it, and what was coming up for us around the topic. One participant shared a beautiful poem she had written, which added a deeply personal and reflective element to the discussion.
Participants described the Death Café as interesting, engaging, and informative. One attendee shared that they always gain new perspectives when attending these conversations.
Challenges & Adjustments:
-
There was a small hiccup when someone enabled Zoom’s transcription feature, which others did not appreciate. In response, I have now turned off all recording and transcription services for future meetings.
-
One participant had trouble with their camera, and attendees generally preferred that everyone be on video. To address this, I updated the event flyer to specify the expectation of being on camera.
Feedback & Takeaways:
-
Comfort Level: Participants felt comfortable during the discussion, with no suggestions for improvement.
-
Structure & Facilitation: The open discussion format worked well, and no major changes were suggested. Facilitation was rated highly, with no improvement recommendations.
-
Impact: One attendee shared that they always learn something new or gain a fresh perspective at Death Cafés.
Final Thoughts:
I felt a strong sense of connection with the group and am looking forward to the next gathering! If someone were considering attending a Death Café, one participant’s advice would be: “Definitely do!”
